Vintage tricycles have seen a significant increase in popularity among collectors over the past several years. Specifically, many famous manufacturers created stylish models throughout their history. This offers enthusiasts an interesting variety of designs to explore. Furthermore, these tricycles are available in models from the pre-1900s onward. Consequently, collectors can easily find pieces to round out their specific specialty.
Did you know…?
Did you know that hand cranks likely powered the first tricycle?
Historians found evidence that a German man built the world’s first tricycle in 1680. Because he was paralyzed from the waist down, the three-wheeled design helped him maintain balance. Furthermore, two-hand cranks powered the device. Later, Frenchmen Blanchard and Maguire developed the first pedal-powered version. This happened one hundred ten years after the original invention.
Retro designs often make a quiet comeback in the world of cycling. Specifically, the styling from the 60s, 70s, and 80s often tugs at the heartstrings of adults today. Vintage tricycles may lack the speed of modern trikes. However, they bring a unique sense of nostalgia that modern plastic models cannot replicate.
Shopping for Vintage Tricycles
You will find many impressive options when shopping for these items online. For instance, you can find 1960s models made by the AMF Junior Toy Co. These trikes often remain in excellent condition despite their age. Furthermore, the 1930s models with the trademark curved frame bar are very popular. Specifically, manufacturers produced these in a wide range of vibrant colors.
Your child might love a classic green model with Mickey Mouse illustrations. Alternatively, you could look for a 1920s vintage tricycle for a truly retro look. These older pieces are often elementary in design. Consequently, they might need a new paint job or minor modifications. AMF Junior frames from the 1960s are also great because you can still attach new handlebars to them today.
Precision Metal offered another unique design during the sixties. This model featured metallic brown paint and a diagonal seat bar. Additionally, a small metal hood covered the front wheel. These small details make vintage tricycles stand out from modern toys.
Classic Tricycle Manufacturers
Schwinn
Schwinn remains one of the most popular brands for collectors. Specifically, you must decide between buying a new “retro” model or an authentic vintage piece. A classic Schwinn features a brightly colored frame with high arching details. Therefore, it serves as both an attractive showpiece and a comfortable ride.
Western Auto Supply
Western Auto Supply is famous for the Western Flyer line. This brand produced several attractive vintage tricycles that hold great value today. Specifically, Western Flyers offered constant innovations in frame style. Consequently, there is a great deal of variety from one model year to the next.
Big Wheel
Collectors often overlook Big Wheels because of their plastic frames. However, these bikes are gaining popularity once again. They represent a specific era of childhood for many people. Therefore, finding a Big Wheel in good condition can effectively round out a 1970s collection.
Trek
People usually associate Trek with modern sportbikes. Still, several vintage Trek models are ideal for a serious collection. These models help new riders learn balance without extra help. Furthermore, the distinct building style ensures a Trek will stand out among other metal trikes.
Collecting American Classic Tricycles
Buying vintage tricycles has become a primary focus for many bike dealers. Most well-known brands offer a trademark model that fits into any home display. Furthermore, shopping online helps you compare makers and prices easily. Consequently, you can find new pieces at a great price and grow your collection quickly.
Finding old models in mint condition is not always easy. However, if you are willing to restore old tricycles, you can create a high-quality showpiece. Most classic manufacturers still offer replacement parts and guides. Therefore, you can return your vintage bikes to their prime condition with a little effort.
Whether you are a newcomer or a long-time hobbyist, these items offer great appeal. Specifically, they provide a tangible link to the history of American manufacturing.

Hi there
Can you send us a picture of your tricycle?
Hiwant to know value
I have a radio flyer tricycle with canopy & it looks a lot like the 2 lil ones but without the canopy
Iא sounds like you have a Radio Flyer tricycle that’s very similar to the “4-in-1 Stroll ‘N Trike” or “Deluxe Steer & Stroll Trike”, but yours is missing (or came without) the canopy.
To figure out exactly which model you have, can you tell me a bit more? For example:
1. Does it have a push handle for adults to steer?
2. Are there footrests that fold in or out?
3. What color is it (red, pink, etc.)?
4. Any model number or name printed under the seat or on the frame (like Model 811Z, 481A, etc.)?
Once I know that, I can tell you exactly which model it is — and whether a canopy can be added or if it’s a non-canopy version of a similar model.
I am trying to find out what brand and year this tricycle is. Any information would be great, thanks.
1967 – 1969 Tricycle. Manufactured by Murray, but several versions of this were licensed to other companies, like Western Flyer, AMF etc.
Anybody know abt this one?
Hi, i recently bought this tricycle in Thailand, the name on the plate on the gooseneck and footpanel is red Indian, I’m just looking for some information on it as it is similar to the boohnthee style (which I found a few) but only found one of these, is it worth holding onto or restoring? Any info would be appreciated, I’m guessing it is from about the same era as the boohnthee made in Burma ones (1930’s?)

I have a tricycle from the 30’s or 40’s which is green and white in color. The grips are white. It has a brass tag riveted on the front, however I can’t see the name. On the bottom of the front fender on each side is the name Skippy, put there when made and not some kids name painted on. On the back axle there are two individual steps to stand on, instead of a platform going all the way across. Looking at pictures of old tricycles, I can’t find anything that looks the same. Wondering if it might have something to do with Skippy Skinner of comic book fame from the 20’s and 30’s?
Thank you, James Dugan, Frenchtown, MT
My wife and I found this tricycle and not sure of what era or an approximate value, other than the seller wants 125, we like it but don’t want to over pay. Thank you for any help you can give.

I have an old tricycle that is so old, the seat is wood and the trailer that comes with it is has wood rails around it it is in desperate need to be restored. I am looking for someone near the Portland area Oregon to restore this for me. Any ideas would be great!
Trying to find out what brand this Tricycle is. It was my Mother’s she was born in 1935
I am curious if anyone can positively identify this tricycle from my childhood. I restored it for my grandson in 2016. It was originally a Christmas present for my older brother in either 1955 or 1956. It was handed down to my sister and then to me. The original rear wheels have been replaced along with the pedals. The closest i came to identifying it was an AMF Junior. I’m attaching an original picture from 1955-56
That’s a great old photo — and it helps a lot. The tricycle in the picture looks like a 1950s Murray chain-drive tricycle, possibly from the “Jet Flyer” or “Chain Drive Murray” line.
Here are some identifying details that match:
The large front wheel with pedals connected by a chain drive (rather than pedals on the wheel itself).
The solid metal fenders and the wide step platform at the back.
The curved handlebar and spring saddle.
The rear wheels smaller than the front — consistent with your rusty frame’s proportions.
So yes — your trike frame from the previous photo appears to be the same model type as the tricycle in this vintage picture.
If you’re restoring yours, you’re probably looking for:
Front tire: 16″ pneumatic (fits a 16″ rim)
Rear tires: about 13″ solid or semi-pneumatic (fits a 13″ rim)
Chain, pedals, grips, and seat — all replaceable with reproduction parts

Looking for help identifying a tricycle I have. I pick it up wanting to redo it for my granddaughter and want to find out who made it and what year. But have no idea where to look ? It has a big wheel on the front and handle bars that look like a bat wing one piece frame looks kind of art deco. I would like to make it look like it’s suppose to any help would be appreciated
I can’t identify who made or owned it, but the object in your photo appears to be a vintage chain-drive pedal tricycle frame — likely a Murray or similar brand from the mid-20th century.
Here’s what I can tell from its design:
The large front wheel and chain drive suggest it’s one of the “Murray chain-pedal” or “Chain Drive Jet Flyer” style tricycles popular in the 1950s–1960s.
The swooping rear fender and step platform are very typical of Murray and AMF steel trikes of that era.
It’s missing the two smaller rear wheels, tires, and handlebar grips, but the overall frame shape matches the old pressed-steel body trikes.
If you’re restoring it, you’ll likely need:
16-inch front tire and rim (pneumatic or solid rubber)
Two 13-inch rear tires/wheels (hard rubber originals or modern replacements)
Possibly new pedals, grips, seat cover, and chain
Looking for help i know it’s a Evans but any other information would be very helpful
Thanks for the photo — that’s definitely an interesting old tricycle! You’re correct that it’s an Evans (Evans Products Company, Plymouth, Michigan), which made bicycles and tricycles mostly in the 1940s through the 1960s.
From what I can see:
1. The frame and fender design, plus the large saddle and streamlined tank area, suggest it’s from the 1950s.
2. The rubber grips (red) and metal pedals with rubber inserts** were common on mid-century Evans trikes.
3. The fork and wheel hub style are consistent with the Evans-Colson line after Evans bought Colson in the early 1950s.
It’s probably an Evans-Colson “Fire Chief” or “Rocket” tricycle, or a similar model marketed under different names (Evans reused frames with different decals and accessories).
If you’d like, you can:
1. Look under the rear axle housing or bottom of the frame for a serial number (usually stamped or engraved).
2. Tell me what logos or decals remain on the frame (even partial words or shapes help a lot).
3. Share a close-up photo of the front badge or tank area — Evans often had embossed logos or painted emblems that can narrow it down to a specific year range.
