Murray Tricycle is one of the most famous and sought-after tricycles in the world of vintage bicycles and tricycles. Although they’re readily available through auction sites like eBay, these tricycles still fetch a great price in mint condition. They’re so much fun to add to a collection, and they are such a nostalgic piece, particularly for older generations. During its heyday in the 1950s and 60s, a Murray tricycle was the most excellent way to get around. However, the company itself was founded decades earlier in the 20th century. Then, it was mostly a car parts company. However, in the 1920s, its management focused on making tricycles. Being a pioneer in this field, Murray used a two-step design process that was first used in the 1960s. Besides the solid build quality, one of the Murray tricycle hallmarks was the curved handlebars. It took a little while for Murray to make a name for itself as a reputed manufacturer of tricycles after switching from making toy cars. Demand for their products forced them to quit their initial setup in Cleveland and open a more extensive operation in Tennessee. History
The Murray Company was founded initially as the Murray Ohio Manufacturing Company. It was founded in the early 1900s in Cleveland, Ohio, and began making tricycles in 1923. The company was initially established to supply parts such as fenders, gas tanks, and hoods for the American automobile industry. In 1923, the Murray Company started to include a line of children’s toy cars that eventually became an American icon. After such great success in the toy industry, Murray manufactured toy automobiles and airplanes for children, both foot-propelled and steel coaster wagons. It also produced the company’s first bicycle, the Mercury. With these successes came the production of Murray’s first tricycle. The Murray tricycle was a considerable success, requiring the company to relocate from Ohio to a much bigger manufacturing facility in Tennessee. Over the next several decades, this factory grew to be one of the biggest in the United States and still is today. In 1960, Murray was the first company to introduce the rear two-step design for tricycles. It’s easy to determine whether a tricycle was made before or after 1960. In the 1970s, Murray came out with a new tricycle they called the Big Mack. It had one thick tube that acted as the head tube and was the frame’s makeup. Murray made many variations of this tricycle style.

Buying a Vintage Murray Tricycle
Many Murray vintage tricycles can be very valuable, but it’s essential to know if you’re getting an official Murray or a replica. Many Murray tricycles have hubcaps with the letter “M” stamped inside a circle. This is a great way to determine on an otherwise unmarked tricycle whether it’s a Murray or not. This was the only one available in Charlotte, N.C. in 1964. I was a very tall child and needed an extra large trike. It is in excellent condition. The seat came off and was rewelded on. I would like to sell it. A little known bit of trivia is that the second step in the back was designed by the Cleveland, Ohio, potter/architect/artist Victkor Schreckengost. He had a patent on that part of the Murray trike. Murray has no record of anything from 1964. I had asked. So I dug around on my own once I found a photo of an exhibit of his work in the Cleveland Museum of Art. I was en route to meet him when he died at the age of 101.
My vintage Murray has rear wheels that were rubber over a stick wrapped around the metal rim. Was this a common practice?

Hello I have a 1950 era mercury that I cant seem to find the proper logo to go on the front. Is there any way you could point me in the right direction. The tricycle has the single step in the back with one solid bar going down to the step. On the front it has a fancy chrome piece that is stamped connected to a set of shaped bars that curve down and connect to the front wheels and connect at the pedals.

Just happened across this tricycle website. Your Mercury tricycle dates to 1937, give or take a year. This is based on a 1937 catalog page shown in the book “Riding Toys”.

I found an old tricycle in a barn. I believe it is a Murray Mercury but I haven’t been able to find one online with this style of handlebars.
